Evidence-informed School-based Practice for Children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular degenerative disorder that requires a multi-disciplinary approach carefully tailored to the phases of the disease process that incorporates positioning, equipment, and physical activity to enhance the individual's ability to participate. In gaining insight and understanding of the phases of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, clinicians can develop a plan of accommodations, modifications, and support for mobility, physical education, recess, mealtimes, and toileting. We plan to present evidence and discussion covering these aspects of planning and intervention particularly within the educational environment. A resource document to guide both clinicians and the school teams they support will supplement accommodation and modification decision making through a “Traffic Light” system. This workshop will provide an overview of evidence on determining the phase of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the clinical recommendations based on research and clinical opinion, and the timeline for introduction of recommended interventions. Opportunities will be provided for interaction and discussion throughout to encourage participants to reflect on how they might integrate the information and evidence informed clinical recommendations in their practice.
