This course will focus on providing LGBTQ+ inclusive pediatric physical therapy care. With recent evidence from the CDC citing that 1 in 4 high schoolers identify as LGBTQ+, it is not a matter of if you work with children in this population, but when. Pediatric physical therapists are in a unique position to provide inclusive, affirming care to this underserved group of children, across practice settings and in various stages of development. While using inclusive language and understanding the impact of incorporating a child’s correct pronouns is important, this course will go beyond that to discuss complex situations including caregiver education, considerations for this population in all settings, and screening and subsequent interventions unique to LGBTQ+ youth. We aim to guide pediatric physical therapists and physical therapy assistants in fostering a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ youth and their caregivers and maximizing a patient-centered approach to promote the health and wellness of every child.
Learning Objectives:
Identify personal and clinical actions that can increase feelings of safety and inclusivity for children and their caregivers who identify as LGBTQ+.
Develop evaluation and intake practices that improve patient care considering the MSK and other systems needs of pediatric patients who identify as LGBTQ+.
Develop an action plan for the creation of referral resources that benefit the care of LGBTQ+ patients and their caregivers.
