NICU Case Series: Innovations in Neonatal Physical Therapy Practice

An overview is provided of the case series method for implementation in the NICU setting, 2 unique case series, and a nationwide NICU practice survey of workplace trauma and bullying. Neonatology Fellowship graduates address innovations for infants with feeding impairment, non-pharmacological pain and stress management, and workplace trauma and bullying data in the NICU setting. The Neonatology Fellowship research component is highlighted to demonstrate how clinicians may develop, document, and analyze care practices to advance the science of Neonatal Physical Therapy. Benefits of fellowship education are highlighted and examples of advancing physical therapy practice in the NICU are described.

Learning Objectives:

  • 1. On completion of this course the learner will describe the feasibility of using the case series method for documenting and analyzing infant responses to interventions in the NICU setting.
  • 2.On completion of this course the learner will explain examples of feasible, applied research in the NICU that Physical Therapy Fellows in Neonatology are completing to advance the science and practice of Neonatal Physical Therapy.
  • 3. On completion of this course the learner will identify NICU workplace trauma elements, non-pharmacological pain management strategy, and cervical stethoscope examination of swallow and respiration during infant feeding therapy.
