ADVANCING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR THE COMPLEX PATIENT: AQUISITION AND EXPLORATION OF HEART RATE DATA IN THE GMFCS VI AND V SCHOOL-BASED POPULATION

Purpose: The purpose of this Specia Interest Report is to collect and analyze heart rate data in children with Cerebral Palsy GMFSC levels IV and V that is being recorded during physical therapy sessions in a school-based setting with the goal of furthering research and inspiring future studies with this population.

Description: A special interest report was completed to document the minimum, maximum, and average heart rate data of children ages 6-21 years old diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy GMFCS level IV and V captured during their physical therapy sessions. The Polar H10 Heart Rate Sensor was utilized during approximately 30-minute physical therapy sessions at the children’s school over the course of several months. Physical therapy sessions included various activities such as active stepping in a supported gait trainer, adapted tricycle riding, mat mobility, manual wheelchair propulsion, and power wheelchair driving.

Summary of Use: The current research on children with Cerebral Palsy Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV and V is sparse, specifically in exercise prescriptions and standardized heart rate zones. Currently, there are limited guidelines regarding heart rate monitoring during physical activity for GMFCS levels IV and V in the pediatric population. The hope of this report is to spark interest in future research of heart rates in this population in a more controlled research setting.

Importance to Members: The data collected in GMFCS level IV and V's has illuminated the differences that various therapeutic activities impact the cardiovascular system as evidence through heart rate data.
